Résumé de la publication
Parkia biglobosa and Pterocarpus erinaceus are two plants used in traditional medicine to treat many diseases. The purpose of the study was to assess the acute toxicity of aqueous extracts of P. biglobosa fruit pods and P. erinaceus leaves. Acute toxicity was assessed according to OECD Guideline 423 by oral administration to Wistar rats of aqueous plant extracts at a dose of 2,000 mg/kg of live body weight. Three groups of rats were used : the control group and two treated groups receiving the aqueous extracts of the plants at a dose of 2,000 mg/kg of live body weight. The administration of the extract of P. biglobosa caused in the rats some clinical signs such as breathing difficulties, weakness and anorexia, a significant decrease (p <0.05) in the relative weight of the lung, the liver and the heart compared to the control group. Haematological parameters were similar in all groups except for the white blood cell count, which was low for P. erinaceus (p <0.05) and the blood platelet counts which was higher for P. biglobosa (p <0.05). Concerning biochemical parameters, both plants lowered glycaemia compared to control group (p <0.05). P. erinaceus decreased GPT transaminase (p <0.05). No mortality was recorded during the study. Both plants can therefore be considered as low toxic plants. Histological studies on the affected organs would make it possible to conclude on the action of P. biglobosa on these organs.
